HAMAMELIS
Part used: The bark and leaves.
Active Principles: The leaves contain a high proportion of tannins. It also features gallic and caffeic acid, as well as various flavonic heterosides with myricetin, quercetin, and kampferol. It is also particularly rich in essential oils. The chemical composition of the bark is quite similar to that of the leaves.
Properties: Venotonic, vasoprotective, hemostatic, astringent, anti-inflammatory, activator of skin circulation, healing.
Mechanism of action: Contracts the wall of the veins, activating the blood circulation inside; stops bleeding, strengthens the walls of veins and blood capillaries, similar effect to vitamin P (routine). The cathechic tannins present in witch hazel are capable of inhibiting different mediators involved in inflammatory processes such as those derived from the arachidonic acid cascade and the platelet activation factor (PAF). Witch hazel tannins bind to proteins and precipitate them, exerting an astringent effect.
Indications: Varicose veins, prevention of phlebitis and thrombosis, capillary fragility, hemorrhoids, hemorrhages, stomatitis, pharyngitis, circulatory problems, infections in the oral mucosa.
